Gotcha Mama podcast episode 40 – Understanding How Personality Affects Parenting with Sandra Etherington

If you’ve ever wondered what in the world goes through your kids’ heads when they behave the way they do sometimes, you are going to LOVE this episode of the Gotcha Mama podcast!

It’s no secret that I really enjoy personality type testing.

Enneagram, Myers-Briggs, DiSC, StrengthsFinder, Colors, LIFO, “What Disney Princess Are You?” Quiz, etc. You name it, I’ve probably taken it!

I don’t know about you. But I’m SO interested in how people are wired. And more importantly, how people can work together to complement each other’s strengths and communicate more effectively.

Especially when it comes to parenting, marriage, and disciplining kids!

Communication and meaningful connections are KEY pieces in the ever-evolving relationship you have with your kids and your spouse. But how do you do that in everyday life?

For example, I know disciplining young kids can be HARD, my friend. Like, really really hard. Disciplining effectively and also in a way that makes children feel loved, understood, and affirmed is not easy at all.

That’s why I was super pumped to talk with my guest on this episode, Sandra Etherington. Sandra is the mom of two young kids and the owner of Family Personalities, a business that aims to help families through the use of Personality Type.

Sandra helps families determine the personality type preferences of each family member using the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator. Then walks you through how to use that information to determine how you can more effectively communicate within your family.

How amazing is that?!

The Myers-Briggs model recognizes that we are all wired with different preferences and mental processes that determine the way we prefer to interact with the world. – Family Personalities website

More about the guest

Sandra has a degree from UCLA in Mathematics and a background in Big 4 Accounting. She uses her talent for analysis and data, combined with her training and passion for Myers-Briggs personality type to help families work together more effectively to raise their uniquely wired children to be the best versions of themselves that they can be.

Sandra has INFJ preferences as well as identifying as an Enneagram 1 (self-preservation subtype).

Sandra recently launched the Family Personalities podcast. If you love Myers-Briggs, Enneagram or other personality type models or want to know more about them in the family setting, check it out!

We talk about

  • How she was introduced to the Myers-Briggs typing indicator
  • How she uses her Myers-Briggs preference knowledge in her everyday mom life
  • If and how you can accurately determine your child’s personality type
  • Some practical ways to use Myers-Briggs preferences to discipline your children effectively
  • The widespread confusion and misunderstanding of the Introvert versus Extrovert preference
  • And several other misconceptions about personality typing tests
